Mobile Communications - LG to Adopt SavaJe Tech Software in Handsets
December 07, 2004
LG Electronics has announced that starting from 2005 it will launch a range of 2.5G and 3G mobile phones based on software of SavaJe Technologies, a fledging handset software company pit against dominant players such as Nokia and Microsoft. By leveraging Sun Microsystems?technology, SavaJe OS (Operating System) is able to provide a total Java environment for mobile phones. Both LG Electronics and SavaJe expect their partnership will generate substantial business opportunities for mobile java developers as well as operators.

Located in Boston, SavaJe is partly owned by three major mobile operators including Vodafone, France Telecom, and Deutsche Telekom. The three European companies hope to reduce reliance on Nokia and Microsoft for handset OS high-end models.

Despite its partnership with SavaJe, LG Electronics refrained from committing its handsets to the software. The Korean company has also said it will adopt Nokia's Series 60 software, running on top of Symbian software, to drive some high-end handsets.
